A no-obligation conversation about your space.
The handrail is the part of your staircase you touch daily. It should be comfortable to hold and consistent with your home’s design. Prestige has been crafting custom hardwood stair railings for Calgary homes since 1989.
We custom mill all of your wood components right here in Calgary.
Understanding the differences between a handrail, a banister, and a full railing system can help you decide how much of your staircase needs to be updated.
This is simply the top rail that you hold onto as you walk up and down the stairs.
This includes the handrail along with all supporting elements, such as the balusters (or spindles), the newel posts anchoring the ends, and the connecting top pieces and turns.
Choosing between these options depends on your existing setup. If your balusters remain sturdy and only the wooden banister shows wear, replacing just the handrail offers a simple, cost-effective update. If the entire structure feels loose or no longer suits your taste, replacing the full system ensures lasting stability and safety. We can measure your space directly and guide you toward the best approach.
Wood softens architectural lines and adds warmth to a stairwell. We install indoor wood railings in three main locations:
Because we build exclusively for indoor applications, every wood railing we produce is carefully milled, jointed, and installed to suit climate-controlled living spaces.
Wood offers a wide range of design possibilities. For example, a heavy turned baluster creates a traditional look, whereas a sleek square-section handrail provides a modern aesthetic using the exact same material. The wood species you choose plays a key role in shaping the finished style.
We typically work with Poplar, Maple, Red Oak, White Oak, Walnut, and Fir. We can source other wood species on request. Maple and White Oak are ideal for modern wood staircases thanks to their light tones and tight, clean grain patterns. Walnut offers richer, darker tones suited to classic designs, while Poplar is the standard selection for painted finishes where the natural wood grain will be covered.
We hand over your wood railing ready for finishing, so your painter can match the color on site to the trim and hardwood flooring already in your house under your home’s natural light.
We can meet at your home or welcome you to our showroom. We always measure your physical space directly instead of relying solely on architectural blueprints.
After you choose your preferred wood species and profile, we create 3D renderings to help you visualize the final railing in your stairwell. During this stage, we also verify that the layout complies with local building codes before fabrication begins. Please note that engineering drawings and approvals are the customer’s or contractor’s responsibility.
We custom mill all wood components in our local shop rather than modifying mass-produced parts. Because we custom craft our components to order, we typically require at least three weeks’ notice for bookings once specifications and pricing are confirmed. This window covers manufacturing the parts and booking the installation date.
Our installers ensure a precise fit and finish for your railing. A quality control team performs a follow-up check 24 hours after installation, and we back all installations with a one-year guarantee covering labour and materials.

Areas
We manufacture in Calgary and provide installation services from locations in Calgary and Edmonton. Our service areas cover both cities as well as surrounding communities like Canmore, and we also handle select projects in locations such as Fort McMurray.
The handrail (or banister) refers specifically to the top rail you hold while using the stairs. A full system includes the handrail along with the underlying balusters and supporting newel posts. If your existing structure is in good shape, replacing only the handrail is a smaller, simpler project.
Our most common options are Poplar, Maple, Red Oak, White Oak, Walnut, and Fir, but we can source additional species upon request. Poplar is typically recommended for painted finishes.
We leave the finishing to your painter by design. Installing the railing unfinished allows your painter to match the exact finish of your existing floors and trim directly on site under your home’s lighting conditions.
Yes. Combining a wood top rail with metal balusters or placing a wood cap on a glass panel are both popular design choices. You can read more about glass options on our Glass Railings page.
Yes, we regularly work with both homeowners undertaking renovations and home builders managing new construction projects.

Aluminum components may be used depending on the job, sourced from outside suppliers to our specifications.
We offer 6mm, 8mm, 10mm, 12mm, and 20mm glass depending on the application, fabricated by a local supplier. We provide both framed (using a shoe base channel) and frameless (using standoffs) options.
